The word technology has its origins in the Greek technikós and loosely translated means something like “work of art” or “craft”. Technology in the scientific sense describes all man-made objects such as machines, devices, or apparatus.
Technology is traditionally assigned to the engineering sciences. However, the specific nature of the technology used and produced cannot really be assigned exactly to a specific subject area. Most technical objects are an interaction of different technical fields, such as structural engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or electrical engineering.
The history of Technology
One of the oldest and most important technical devices in human history is probably the wheel, the oldest finds of which date back to 4,000 BC. were dated. But bow and arrow and spearheads, whose history goes back much further, are also technical inventions if you look closely.
Over the years, more and more technical devices and tools have been invented by humans. The ancient Romans brought in the period from the 8th century BC. and the 7th century AD, and a large number of technical inventions emerged. This boom did not start again until the second half of the 18th and 19th centuries during the Industrial Revolution.
Today, computer technology in particular is developing at a rapid pace. Terms used in recent years that stand for important technical innovations are, for example, haptic displays, OLED technology, artificial intelligence, or robot technology.

Technical disciplines
Technology is an area that mixes very strongly with a wide variety of other disciplines and science. The main technical disciplines are:
Structural engineering
Structural engineering deals with technical-constructive aspects of building construction and civil engineering.
Biotechnology
Biotechnology, also known as biotechnology, deals with the use of enzymes, cells, and whole organisms in technical applications.
Computer Technology
Computer technology deals with the design of information-processing systems, i.e. computers.
Digital Technology
Digital technology works with the processing of value and time-discrete values and sequences of numbers, which are referred to as digital signals.
Electrical engineering
Electrical engineering deals with research and technology development as well as the production technology of devices or processes that are based at least partially on electrical energy.
Energy Technology
Energy technology deals with the topic of energy in an interdisciplinary manner. The main content is the technologies for efficient, safe, environmentally friendly, and economical generation, conversion, transport, storage, and use of energy in all its forms.
Mechanical engineering
Mechanical engineering deals with the development, construction, and production of machines.
Nuclear Technology
Nuclear technology, also known as nuclear technology or colloquially known as atomic technology, deals with the use of nuclear reactions and radioactivity for human purposes.
Microtechnology
Microtechnology deals with processes that are used to produce bodies and geometric structures with dimensions in the micrometer range (0.1–1000 µm).
Nanotechnology
Research in cluster physics and surface physics, surface chemistry, semiconductor physics, and areas of chemistry is referred to as nanotechnology. Nanotechnology deals with structure sizes below 100 nanometers.
Production
Technology Production technology includes processes and measures for the manufacture of new goods.
