Kindness Is An Investment

Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-7

And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?  9:2 And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said Thy servant is he.  9:3 And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.  9:4 And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar.  9:5 Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar.  9:6 Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!  9:7 And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

INTRODUCTION:

Most of the things we enjoy in life from people today are the kindness planted by either our parents, friends, and relatives. It’s a seed planted to grow into a tree with branches, leaves, and fruits. Kindness is an act of love that when you show (Invest) in others, it comes back to you either in your lifetime or when you’re gone. In Galatians 6:7 and Luke 12:2 prove to us that “whatever a man sows he would reap”

Be possessed by the kindness and live therein as a nature for there is great gain. Most times we wonder why we get things unmerited or why people favor us unconditionally; there is nothing much but the ‘Voice of Kindness’ when you’re kind, it flows inside you as a magnetic Flux and gets things for you.

Let’s see the definition of these two words KINDNESS and INVESTMENT

KINDNESS – Is the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate

I interpret it as KIND + NEXT meaning showing kindness to the next people. So here self is denied.

INVESTMENT – the action of investing many or something for a profit.

Question: Should our kindness to others be demanding or does it necessarily mean that we should expect a profit in return when we show help? NO! what we are saying is that it is responsive. And you shouldn’t expect it but it must speak when the act is done. Just like a seed you planted in good faith; which comes as a Harvest to you after many days, months, and years.

KINDS OF KINDNESS

– Destructive Kindness –

This is a kindness with a dangerous motive. The beginning seems lovely and kind with a motive to attract you for destruction. That’s you need to be careful before you are trapped with this kind. For example Saul to David ( 1 Samuel 18:9, 20-25)

And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.  18:20 And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.  18:21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.  18:22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now, therefore, be the king’s son in law.  18:23 And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?  18:24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.  18:25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

Saul swore to give his daughter whoever that would kill Goliath and finally it ended up falling on the shoulder of David. The scripture above tells us how Saul was willing to get David and kill him through her daughter ( David’s wife) but in all God was with David and directs him. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul was chosen as King and rejected when he disobeyed God and the disobedient was when God told Moses that Amalek would be wiped out from the face of the Earth for denying to let Israel pass Exodus 17:8-13, and verse 14 was  very significant ” And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven”

Saul failed God on this assignment and thereby tend to make God a lie and God was displeased with him. In 1 Samuel 16, David was anointed King as a replacement to Saul, and Saul didn’t know. In 1 Samuel 17, Goliath challenged Israel for 40 days ( verse 16) but ended up being killed by David. In 1 Samuel 18, when David killed Goliath of Philistines, he went to the house of Saul and Jonathan Saul’s son loved him ( Kindness is a thing of the soul) 1 Samuel 18:1 – and it came to pass, when he made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul and verse 7 was how he entered a problem with Saul after the Praises of the women “Saul killed his one thousand and David ten thousand”

Please all that glitters is not gold. The Bible says “in all your getting get wisdom” many ladies have lost their lives in the hands of some men who showed them this kindness to drag them to hotel and waste them, many families have been destroyed by their kinsmen after a land dispute and they disguise themselves with a show of kindness which was a trap to them; and many other examples. Be guided even as a receiver.

Note: One thing about Kindness is whether is negative or positive, it definitely comes back to you either as a reward or Karmer.

2: TRUE KINDNESS

– Jonathan to David. 1 Samuel 18:4 Jonathan showed his love of kindness by given his kingship position to David and 1 Samuel 19:1-2, Saul ordered the death of David but Jonathan spared him and both entered into a Covenant 1 Samuel 20:14-16.

The Kindness of Rehab to the spies that came from Israel in Joshua chapter 2.

Some kindness are binding by covenant and it last to generations. Example Jonathan and David 1 Samuel 20:14-16 and the kindness of Rehab and the spy Joshua 2:8-18 and 6:23

The effectiveness of this kindness was the Covenant established.

3: THE KINDNESS OF GOD

Is the ultimate anyone could get. When God shows you his loving-kindness you equally attract love and favor from man. David was seen by God as an “apple of his eyes” because he always ask for God’s Kindness and he got Psalms 119:76

When God shows you kindness, he turns the heart of men towards you.

REWARD OF KINDNESS

Every reward you get comes by your input. So it shows that something or a task has been completed for a reward to be given

– in Ruth 3:10, She followed after Naomi her mother In-law despite all the troubles that came upon her and got the reward of kindness at the end.

– in 1 Kings 5:1-18, the king of tyre; king Hiran gave Solomon Kindness not just because of Solomon but for David his father’s sake. For David was his good friend and helped him and now that he was no more alive, he needs to reciprocate to his son Solomon.

Note: Kindness has a voice that shouts out when reward time comes. Go ahead in doing good to people for either you reap yourself or someone from you reaps it. But in all, kindness is an investment. In 2 Samuel 9:1 And David said: ” Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul that I may show him KINDNESS for Jonathan’s sake?”

At this point, Saul and Jonathan were no more alive for the died in a battle and even though Saul died as an enemy to David but the investment of Jonathan to David wiped of the enmity that Kind David is now looking for anyone from Saul’s house( his enemy) which all had died remaining crippled from Jonathan in the person of Mephibosheth who ended up to be in David’s house and eat bread continually.

The best investment of life is on people. Praise God!
