… FMC Refuses Comment On Reported Patient
… Cttee Yet To Address Imo After 2Months Of Inauguration
While other states in the Federation have note eased in updating the masses on the situation report of the dreaded coronavirus that has been ravaging the universe, the Imo State case appears different, shrouded in secrecy and uncertainty.
This is worrisome even when the COVID-19 committee constituted by Imo State government is yet to brief Imo people on the situation of the virus in Imo after two months of its existence.
Recently, all the electronic and print media were awash with the news that a certain Covid-19 patient was discovered in Imo and was deposited at the Isolation center in Owerri Federal Medical Center for treatment.
This news of the said patient was confirmed both by the media team of the Owerri Medical Centre and the Covid-19 Committee but since then, no update has been given both from the state government, the Covid-19 committee and even the management of the Owerri FMC under whose isolation center they said the patient was deposited.
Speaking with the media team of the Owerri Medical Centre, the Public Relations Officer Dr. Jecinta Achonu denied knowledge of the patient rather referred our editor to call on the government of Imo State which according to her is in the position to answer the question.
It would be recalled that Imo State Government had in the bid to forestall the entrance of the said disease in Imo, constituted Covid-19 committee chaired by Professor Maurice Iwu, sent 27 Ambulances to the twenty-seven local governments in Imo, unveiled six isolation centers.
As if the above were not enough, the state government went further to shut-down all the major markets in the state, stopped civil servants from working, and even ordered for dusk to dawn curfew in Imo.
When it was announced that the dreaded disease had finally entered the state, the Imo state government never relied on the oars but sent palliative materials down to the villages in the state to cushion the effects of the shut-down on the people.
The roles of the state government in combating the said crime, however, were commended by Imo people home and in the diaspora but the inability of the government particularly the COVID-19 committee to update the frightened citizens on the said pandemic now worries the people who now think whether or not the Government is sincere or not about the pandemic.
Since three weeks ago, a patient was announced to have tested positive of COVID-19 and no follow-up update on whether the patient is responding to treatment or not.
Even the Imo State Commissioner for Health who ordinarily should enlighten Imo on the state of the said disease in Imo is yet to do so.
At the time of filing this report, every effort made to reach her proved abortive as the phone number was not reachable.
