Angry students of the Isa Musthapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, staged a protest against the closure of the school’s registration portal by the institution.
The protest, which began around 12.30pm, lasted for two hours and led to the blockage of the Lafia-Jos federal highway.
It was gathered that the students damaged some property, including part of the administrative block, streetlights, vehicles belonging to staff, the Information and Communication Centre security house, among others, until they were dispersed by personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the protest in Lafia, learnt that the rector narrowly escaped being attacked by the students.
The National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, Mr Alkamis Ladan, said the protest was caused by the closure of the registration portal.
According to him, students are to commence examination on Monday, March 15, 2021, adding that those who have yet to pay for their registration are being compelled to pay N10,000 for late registration before they can access the portal.
Ladan urged the management of the institution to reopen the portal in the interest of peace and the development of the institution.
He also admonished his fellow students to remain calm, assuring that student representatives would engage the management to find a solution to the problem.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Mrs. Justina Kotso, said the management was meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education to decide on the next line of action.
She said, “The management of the institution is currently on top of the situation and as soon as the committee set up by the management concludes its findings, it will brief the press.”
