Members of the House of Representatives has condemned the multiple attacks on Owerri custodial center and other police formations in Imo State and urged security operatives to step up security around other police structures, to avert future occurrence.
In a statement by the Chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Hon. Anayo Edwin, in a on Wednesday, expressed worries that over 1,800 inmates escaped from the Owerri custodial center, during the attack.
The chairman urged the security agencies to probe the case, and find out the attackers and ensure that they pay for the crimes committed.
He also urged the DSS, to join the investigation to find out the remote and immediate cause of the attacks in other to prevent further repetitions.
Edwin said, “The security agencies must strive to avoid a situation where criminals attack custodial centers at will and set the inmates free.”
Furthermore, he urged the populace to report any suspicious movements or engagements around them to the nearest police station.
It is not in the interest of the country and citizens to allow the inmates to roam about freely, Edwin said.
The lawmaker, however, assured that the House, upon resumption from its holiday, would ensure better support for security agencies to enable them to safeguard public facilities.
Hon. Edwin also revealed that his committee will interface with the Ministry of Interior and the Nigerian Correctional Service to explore ways to ensure that the custodial centers are better secured.
