Relief Market not Sold – Ononuju

Attributes False News To Detractors

The attention of the Government of Imo State and the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barrister Kingsley Ononuju (Ekwedashike) has been drawn to fake news circulating in the social media that Relief Market, Owerri has been sold.

Clearly, the allegation as being peddled in the social media is totally false and part of the evil machinations of enemies of the government, who are manifesting in various forms, to cause confusion and incite the masses against the people-oriented government of Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.

The true story is that the Interim Management Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council was accused of collecting unauthorized levies from petty traders in the market and allegedly connived with some people to do illegal construction in the same market, which led to the erroneous conclusion in some quarters, that the market has been sold.

However, Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, upon getting wind of the development, quickly moved into the market, stopped the illegal construction, and quelled the gathering unrest. He equally summoned the market leaders to a crucial meeting at his office on Monday, July 3, 2020, as part of the investigative efforts to unravel the whole gamut of allegations against the Interim Management Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council.

It must be stated categorically, that at no time did the state government sell Relief Market, Owerri to anyone or group, and will never do so. Therefore, the good people of Imo State, including the traders, should remain calm and disregard such unfounded accusations and serpentine lies, emanating from the camp of opposition and enemies of the prosperity Government.

Meantime, the Government of Imo State, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, will soon begin to implement an aggressive market development policy with a world-class template, to upgrade and update Imo major markets with basic amenities and other necessary infrastructure including regular power supply, construction of roads etc.

Therefore, no amount of fake news from the sick opposition can derail the government’s efforts to Recover, Rehabilitate, and Reconstruct the major markets for ease of doing business and improved revenue generation for the state.
