The Honourable member representing Orsu state Constituency Hon. Ekene Nnodumele has sponsored a bill at the floor of Imo State House of Assembly to establish a center for Igbo Language, research and development for the purpose of promoting, preserving and restoring the use of Igbo language in the State. The bill which was read the second time at the floor of the house on Tuesday 8th December,2020 was supported by the majority of other legislators.
Chatting with Journalists in office after the plenary, the Chief Sponsor of the bill, Hon. Nnodumele explained that the bill became imperative owing to the fact that the Igbo Language has faced threats of extinction if care is not taken. He pointed out that the bill was to amend law no. 9 of 2020 law to establish a center for research and development of Igbo Language. He added that the bill is long-awaited because according to him, that was why it received overwhelming support from other members.
Hon. Nnodumele also commended the speaker, Rt. Hon. Paul Emeziem for drumming support for the bill. He stated further that the bill if passed into law would enable the traditional rulers and other related Institutions to uphold the cultural heritage of Igbo Land just as he called on schools and other Institutions to ensure its compliance.
Meanwhile, the speaker Rt. Hon. Paul Emeziem has adjourned plenary till 9th of December,2020.
