… Uzodinma Cages Araraume, Others Out Of Primaries
… Adopts Frank Ibezim As Consensus
… Consensus Dead On Arrival – Araraume
Okigwe Zone bye-election may finally end up in court as Uzodinma led faction of the APC has at last caged out other Aspirants from participating in the much-awaited APC primaries slated for September third by adopting Frank Ibezim as consensus candidate for the party in the forthcoming bye-election.
This is coming as most of the Aspirants have already purchased their forms for the election.
Imo State chapter of the APC was said to have announced to their members over the weekend that it has adopted Frank Ibezim as the candidate of the party for the next election.
Governor Hope Uzodinma had in the last Executive council meeting informed the party members the need to have a consensus candidate for APC in the forthcoming Okigwe Zone bye-election pointing out that such would not only save cost for teeming Aspirants but would make the party more united in Okigwe Zone and Imo in general.
This Uzodinma’s suggestion was heeded to as the party leadership in the State constituted committee to interface with the Aspirants to implement and cement the new agreement.
However, when it appeared that some of the Aspirants rejected the consensus, the committee opted for Direct primaries to select the flag bearer.
As people particularly the Aspirants were waiting for the modalities for the selection, the party last Saturday announced its candidate to be Frank Ibezim.
Available information to Lead Newspapers revealed that Governor Hope Uzodinma had wanted to field in, senator Athan Achonu to replace late senator Uwajumogu but was instructed to support and deliver Frank Ibezim for the said seat by the national leadership of the APC.
Information to this paper further revealed that the said Ibezim was nominated by Emeka Nwajuba who is presently the Minister for Education, state.
Nwajuba who is known as one of the confidants of President Buhari in the South East was said to have insisted on Ibezim and Uzodinma who was in dare need of being incorporated in the national grid of the APC following the death of Abba Kyari, the former Chief of Staff to President Buhari as well as the removal of his political ally, Adams Oshomohole, was instructed to deliver Ibezim for senate as one of the conditions to be reabsorbed into the mainstream of the APC.
However, one of the implications of this move by the Imo State chapter of the APC is that the party may end up, fielding no candidate for the next election as feelers from some of the Aspirants signify their readiness to take the party to court on the basis that the constitution of the party does not accommodate consensus for the senate election.
Recall that this paper had last month on one of the Banner Headlines disclosed the Government’s plan to adopt Ibezim as a consensus candidate for the Okigwe Zone bye-election.
Meanwhile, one of the Aspirants for the election, senator Araraume has called on his teeming supporters to ignore the said consensus by APC in Imo. Araraume disclosed this through his Chief Press Secretary, Diamond Agu.
I wish to state unequivocally that Most Distinguish Senator Ifeanyi Araraume is not a greenhorn in politics. I appeared in a radio program a few days back and made it quite pellucid to lmolites and ndi Okigwe in particular that Senator Araraume is not and will never be perturbed in any way on the failed project called “ADOPTION OF A CONSENSUS CANDIDATE” ahead of the senatorial primaries. Here is a man that understands the dynamics of our modern politics. Talking about our shark-infested murky waters of our politics, he is well-grounded in it.
However, it is indisputable and incontrovertible that the mile Stone achievements of Senator Araraume between 1999 and 2007 when he represented the good people of lmo North at the National Assembly as their Senator has not been surpassed by any of his successors both living and dead.
It is a challenge and we await a publication or statement from any quarter or quarters to controvert our assertion.
In conventional democracy, you allow people to vote and elect their representatives and not to mortgage their inalienable right to vote and be voted for under the guise of consensus. The good people of lmo North will resist any attempt to foist a candidate on them in the name of consensus but there is no gainsaying that ab- initio it is already a failed project.
In any case, those who participated in the so-called consensus screening committee abandoned it because they found out that it was undemocratic and runs foul of the party’s constitution. The constitution of the party is very clear on that issue. Refer to article 20 (ii) of the party’s constitution where the following positions, Local Government Chairmanship, House of Assembly, governorship, House of Reps, Senate, and Presidential primaries were listed. You can only see consensus in article 20(i) (a) and it relates to councillorship primaries and not Senatorial elections.
On the issue of lmo North senatorial bye-election, the idea of consensus became dead on arrival, a figment of the imagination of the proponents of the idea. It is unacceptable by ndi Okigwe, antithetical, a ploy born out of phobia to disenfranchise ndi Okigwe from electing their preferred candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume in the forthcoming primaries.
We have implicit confidence in the leadership of the party both at the state and national levels respectively. A few charlatans and political jobbers cannot hold us to ransom. Come 3rd of September, all the APC card caring members from lmo North will speak with one voice.
