Charles Polevich, a 70-year-old Long Island man, has been arrested on Wednesday for the hit-and-run crash that killed Nicki Minaj’s dad, Robert Maraj.

The driver, Polevich, hid his car under a tarp after asking the dying victim, Nicki Minaj’s father if he was okay, officials said.

Polevich surrendered to the state police on Wednesday and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence for the death of Robert Maraj.

Maraj, who was 64 years old at the time he was killed, was “walking in the roadway” on Roslyn Road near his Mineola home when Polevich allegedly struck him near Raff Ave. about 6:15 p.m. Feb. 12, Nassau County Police said.

Polevich got out of his white 1992 Volvo, stood over Maraj, asked him if “he was okay” then jumped back into his vehicle and drove off, leaving the victim dying in the street, court papers charge.

Polevich hid his car in his garage and covered the vehicle with a tarp, when he reached his home, not far from the crash scene, officials said.

Maraj was hospitalized and died later that day.

Nassau County police said Maraj was either walking home or to a local store. He was walking in the street because sidewalks were covered in snow, investigators believe.

Polevich was driving north on Roslyn when he struck Maraj, who was walking in the same direction, according to prosecutors.

“He was absolutely aware of what happened,” Nassau County Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a press conference Wednesday. “He got out of the car and looked at the deceased. He made the conscious decision to leave.”

Polevich drove home avoiding intersections where he knew there would be cameras, court papers state.

“He did things to alter us from being able to discover the car,” Fitzpatrick said.

Cops however were able to piece together security footage that showed the path of Polevich’s Volvo.

“We were able to track that vehicle prior to accident as well as after the accident and tracked it right to his house,” Fitzpatrick said.

Polevich was ordered held on $250,000 bond during a brief arraignment in Nassau County Criminal Court Wednesday. He is due back in court Friday.

Genevieve Nnaji to star in Fela’s musical show premiering on Clubhouse

Published

on

Nollywood actress and director, Genevieve Nnaji, will star in an audio adaptation of the Broadway musical ‘FELA’ which will premiere on the Clubhouse app this weekend.

The audio adaptation on Clubhouse termed ‘Fela Ten-Twenty’ will portray the “#EndSARS movement in the context of Fela Kuti’s legacy,” Fela Ten-Twenty director/producer, Funa Maduka, told CNN.

The ‘Ten-Twenty’ signifies the date #EndSARS protesters were reportedly shot at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 10, 2020.

“Fela’s music… demanded global engagement with African political thought. In the aftermath of the October 2020 #EndSars protests … his message still achingly resounds. This production is a love letter to those fighting for a better Nigeria,” said Maduka.

The organisers further revealed that Nnaji will star as one of the ‘Kalakuta Queens’, representing the musician’s dancers in Fela Ten-Twenty.

Nnaji revealed in a statement that she is “honoured to be part of the production.”

She said, “The contemporary issues highlighted are what sold me. This is an artful retelling of Fela’s story and I’m honoured to be a part of it.

“I grew up on radio plays and the experience is nostalgic for me – the power of voice to influence minds and touch hearts is undeniable.”

According to Maduka, part of the proceeds from the show on Clubhouse on May 15th and 16th will go to the GEANCO Foundation and will be used to provide scholarship to young female victims of terrorism and gender inequality.

Chidinma speaks on becoming gospel singer, says ‘I’ve had enough fame’

Published

Popular Nigerian singer, Chidinma Ekile, has announced her switch to full-time gospel ministration, saying she regrets `wasting’ so much time doing secular music.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the singer turned actress stated that “the devil has been winning too long.”

She said, “Our God is faithful; He never lies and He does whatever He says. So, I’m here today. It’s been a long journey. I had an opportunity to spend time with Him; it’s a rare privilege to spend time with Him and He told me a lot of things and He said He has been waiting for me.”

The songstress made it known that she is not going into gospel music for the fame as she has had “enough of all of that”.

“God has been very intentional about me. He is very mindful of me. I’m not here because I want fame. I’ve had all of that and I think I’ve had enough of all of that. So, right now is the time to work for my Father. He is the one who has called me I did not bring myself here. As a matter of fact, I did not want to be here, but I’m going into ministry in full force,” Chidinma stated.

She added, “So, most of you might not understand my ways because you don’t know where I’m coming from, and that is because a lot of time has been wasted. So, I need to catch up with time. I’m moving with time, there is no time. The enemy has been winning for too long. I’ve had my share of influence and all of that, but now I’m using all of that.

“Everything the enemy thought he had given to me though was given to me by God, while he was lying that he gave them to me. Now I’m using all of that to work for my father. So, when you see me doing some very extreme things, just understand where I’m coming from, there is no time.

“There are too many people out there we have to bring back into the house. Jesus is coming soon; sooner than you expect. So, we cannot allow them to miss out on that. Now is the time to do the work.”

Chidinma is currently signed on with the Eezee concept and has released her first gospel song titled: “Jehovah overdo.”
