FG to engage 1st class and 2nd Class upper Graduates as teachers

Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono has announced that the federal government will be engaging First Class and Second Class graduates as teachers. 

Echono who spoke on Saturday November 14 as he monitored the conduct of the 2020 October Diet Batch B Teachers’ Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE), noted that teachers without requisite qualifications, competencies and practicing license are presently migrated out of the Nigerian Teaching Service. 

The permanent secretary maintained that the entry level will be higher and teachers absorbed into the programme will get better remuneration with peculiar allowances.

He disclosed that concerned Education agencies are finalising figures with National Income Salaries and Wages, and further added that the federal government  is more interested in learning outcomes and that a National Implementation Committee on teachers’ revitalization/resuscitation plan will be inaugurated before the end of November 2020.

His report; 

“By 2021, we will not engage teachers if they don’t meet particular threshold, we are now limiting entry point of teaching only to the best who are qualified, we will engage individuals with second class upper and first class divisions.

“We will make arrangements for conversion programmes for people who have these categories of results from other fields, they need to learn pedagogy, methodology, through the NTI and the TRCN, and they will undergo specific programmes that will empower them to teach.

“We must enforce Mr. President’s directive that only qualified teachers will be allowed into our classrooms. The Professional Qualifying Examinations is going on smoothly across 34 states and the feedback has been good.”

New dates, centres for post-UTME - OAU

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in Osun State, has fixed new dates for its post-UTME screening exercise.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the Public Relations Officer of the University read this in a press statement titled, ‘OAU fixes new post-UTME dates’ on Thursday.

The statement read in part, “All candidates are hereby informed that new dates, which starts from Saturday, 27th February 2021, will be conducted in two centers: Ile-Ife and Abuja.

“The Post UTME Screening Exercise, which will be conducted in Ile-Ife centre, between Saturday, 27th February and Wednesday, 3rd March 2021 will be on OAU campus and its Centre for Distance Learning, in Moro, while the Abuja Centre will hold on Saturday, 6th March 2021 at the JAMB CBT Centre, Bwari, Abuja.

“In view of this, candidates are advised to log in to the https://www.admissions.oauife.edu.ng to print out their Screening Slips which contain actual dates and venues for each of them, beginning from Sunday, 14th February 2021.

Yabatech ranked the best polytechnic in Nigeria - Webometrics

According to Webometrics , Yaba College of Technology has been ranked as the best Polytechnic in Nigeria based on the release made in January 2021.

The “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities” is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.

 CSIC is among the first basic research organizations in Europe. The CSIC consisted in 2006 of 126 centers and institutes distributed throughout Spain.

CSIC is attached to the Ministry of Education and its main objective is to promote scientific research to improve the progress of the scientific and technological level of the country which will contribute to increasing the welfare of the citizens.

A statement signed by the Media Relations Officer, Yabatech, Felix Alade said, Yabatech was in the 7th position in 2018 and within a space of one year moved to a second position, and subsequently ranked the number one Polytechnic in Nigeria in 2021.

The Statement went further to state in part, “There have been several developments in Yabatech that led into the current webometrics ranking which are: peaceful and rancor-free environment with a stable academic calendar.

“ Conducive learning environment with massive renovation and upgrading of the entire structures in the College to international standard. Digitalization of the library with modern e-learning facilities”.

Meanwhile, according to Webometrics, as of 25th February 2021, the University of Ibadan, is ranked the 1st best University in Nigeria, followed by Covenant University Ota, with Yabatech standing at the 59th Position on that list.

Student emerges one-day principal in Lagos

We have seen various feat in the academic world, where student perform excellently, and thereby accorded meritorial awards and honorarium for their efforts.

Another feat has been performed by Omoobajesu Iroyinayo Idris, a J.S.S 2 student of Bishop Howells Memorial Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos on Monday.

Idris emerged  a one-day principal of the school for the 2020/2021 academic session following her academic feat.

The principal, Ven. Tunde Oduwole said, “As a Christian institution of the Anglican extraction, we are deeply committed to the fact that any student that leaves the school will be the best in all aspects of life. Omoobajesu Iroyinayo Idris, satisfied the entire grading process.

He added that the tradition of being a one-day principal is one that has been on for years. He added that the pupil was judged based on academics, spirituality, and morality.

He also said her emergence showed the school’s respect for girl-child education.

“So much attention is paid to the girl-child; we always celebrate the Girl-child Day as a school.

It underscores what women can contribute to the society. Idris is another potential Cleopatra, Madam Tinubu in the making,” he said.

Mr. Eyo Ekpo who is the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Chairman, while presenting a plaque of recognition to the one-day principal, congratulated her parents, noting that she had made them  proud.

Idris encouraged her fellow students to work hard and fear God to achieve their goals.

She also stressed the importance of studying hard, being punctual and prayerful as pathways to academic excellence.

Idris, who wants to become a surgeon in future, urged the government to provide more schools to help pupils achieve their goals.

Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Idris Abidemi, were delighted as their daughter recorded a feat as the fifth student to occupy the principal’s office.

“Her elder brother encouraged Omoobajesu to read more. She is very brilliant, she has this special kind of a photo-magnetic brain,” her father said.

Idris, who rode the principal’s car, also performed some other official duties including inspecting classes.
