PDP Woos Ex-gov, Okorocha As He Ridicules APC, Plans Party

Published

on

The Senator representing Imo West and former governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, on Monday took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, saying the party was formed in a hurry with the motive of hijacking power from the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015.

Okorocha, in an interview with journalists in Abuja, said he and other politicians who are progress-minded were perfecting a plan to form a new political party.

But the PDP pleaded with the former governor to return to the opposition party instead of going the wrong way as he did in 2014.

According to the Ex-governor, the body language of the Nigerians, speaks volume of the fact that they are not pleased with what is going on in Nigeria.

The Senator who is a founding member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), last week launched a project of the Rivers State Government on the invitation of the state Governor, Nyesom Wike.

At the event, he beckoned on the good people in the APC and the PDP to come together and rescue the nation in 2023.

On Monday he said there was a pressing need for the regrouping of the ‘good politicians’ to bring back restore public confidence in governance and remedy the country.

“The movement for a new Nigeria has commenced and we must come join forces, I mean progressive Nigerians, to make the country work”, Okorocha stated.

Asked if the promise of the new political movement for a new Nigeria would not be in like manner to that of the APC in 2015, he stated that the APC was formed in a hurry in order to take power from the PDP without much emphasis on the character of those leading the movement.

The ex-governor said, “The APC was a hasty arrangement. It was hurriedly set up to take power when the then government was drifting. The APC would have been better until individuals who were not its members; individuals who came for congratulatory messages, hijacked the party and became lords.”

In PDP’s reaction to this, it said it was not a part of those worried by the plan by Okorocha and a few of his friends to form a new political party.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a telephone interview with a correspondent, in Abuja, on Monday, explained that the PDP was happy that more Nigerians especially individuals like the former Imo State governor had seen the deceit the APC represented.

Ologbondiyan said, “Our advice to people like Okorocha is for him to say no to making the same mistake more than once, any party hastily put together like the APC because of the polls are bound to be victims of the same errors.

“He should instead come over to the PDP, a party structured properly with a pedigree of performance. We’ve made some mistakes before now and we’ve learnt our lessons. Nigerians now know the disparity between a well-structured political party which is very much concerned about them and an association of unhappy men who only formed group to grab power for power sake.”

When reached out to, the National Secretary of the Caretaker/ Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee of the APC, Senator John Akpan Udoedeghe, turned down comments on Okorocha’s pronouncement on plans to float a new political party.

He stated, “The Senator is an honored member of our great party, I have nothing to say.”

Be that as it may, a high-ranking member of the APC who is closely familiar with the thinking within the party leadership said the party did not accommodate any fears.

The source stated, “Politics is a game of numbers as much as it is a game of interests. So, if a number of individuals want to converge and go through the process of birthing a new political party, can anyone succeed in stopping them.”
