The commissioner for information in Imo, Hon. Declan Emelumba has demanded a retraction from the publishers of the National Newsbreak, an Owerri based newspaper over what he termed a mischievous report targeted at inciting the public against the government of Senator Hope Uzodinma.
In a press release signed by Emelumba himself and made available to weekend Lead, he condemned in its entirety the report emanating from the said newspaper which was credited to him, revealing that he never authored or issued the maligning report.
Your edition of Mid-week National Newsbreak of Wednesday, June 3rd, 2020, carried a banner headline credited to me to with: “Imo Govt’ll deal Ruthlessly with opposition”.
This headline is not in any way derived from the body of the story which you published on page 8. This is the most unethical.
The substance of my statement is actually a contradiction of the headline, which is “that for the avoidance of doubt, the government will stand by the law to deal with those who mistake opposition to mean reckless fabrication and publication of false, seditious materials against the government. Those indicted for such criminality within or without the opposition must be made to face the full wrath of the law. We insist that democracy must be governed by law both for those in government and those outside government”.
As you can see, this story’s body could not have generated the headline you cast.
You should please publish a Banner headline reflecting my true statement to replace the one you manufactured from nowhere.
