Following the duck to dawn curfew imposed in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State by the state Government over the battle between the members of the Eastern Security Network and Nigerian soldiers which had taken some lives, hunger has already taken centre stage in the area.

Our reporter assigned to the area revealed that Orlu people who are predominantly business people who after the day’s business buy food items from the plethora of local Markets in the area now find it difficult to make living following the imposition of the curfew by the state Government.

Nigeria Army who in the bid to fish out the said members of the Eastern Security Network founded by the Indigenous people of Biafra( IPOB) to protect the Eastern part of Nigeria from invasion of the Fulani Herdsmen in their hideout in one of the villages in Orlu, Umutanze precisely were attacked by the security persons, an act which as reported took lives of some of the soldiers.

Speaking on the issue, the leader of the group, Nnamdi Kanu blamed the federal Government and President Buhari in particular of the havoc in Orlu while accusing Fulani Herders of plot to take over the country.

Kanu who through his Twitter made it clear that if the Fulanis as well as the Presidency have no ulterior motive against the South East, why should they query the security network introduced in Igbo land to protect lives.

Following disturbing report on the activities of a group of militants that unleashed mayhem at residents of Orlu in Imo State, killing and maiming innocent citizens in the process, Governor Hope Uzodimma has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the affected areas just as he ordered the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators without fail.

He said the curfew is an interim measure to immediately restore the peace in Orlu area. It will start  at 6 pm and end at 6 am daily and affects; Orlu, Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Isu, Nwangele and Nkwerre local government areas of Orlu zone.

Addressing a news conference on the matter on Monday, Governor Uzodimma said the perpetrators of the carnage were out to paint a picture of near break down of law and order in Orlu area, noting that government condemns in its entirety acts of extreme hooliganism and brigandage.

The governor advised the residents of the affected LGAs to cooperate fully with the curfew as anyone who violates it will be treated as a suspect.

Governor Uzodimma said that security agencies have been directed to carry out a 24-hour patrol and that law abiding citizens can go about their businesses without fear of molestation.

The governor further condoles with the families of the bereaved and assured them that those who committed the heinous crime against them and their loves ones will not go unpunished.

Governor Uzodimma’s address read in full:  

“This afternoon, I received a very disturbing report on the activities of a group of Militants who unleashed a shooting spree in the Orlu area of the state, killing and maiming innocent citizen in the process.

“I am totally appalled by this sad report which appears to paint a picture of near breakdown of law and order in the Orlu area. The government condemns in its entirety this act of extreme hooliganism and brigandage. This is completely unacceptable to this administration. Those behind this callous barbarism will surely regret their actions.

Consequently, I have directed the security agencies to fish out without fail, all those behind the carnage and immediately bring them to book. Let no one be in any doubt that the perpetrators of this dastardly act will ever escape justice. I assure them that they will pay for their cruelty against a peace loving, innocent people.

“As an interim measure to immediately restore the peace in Orlu zone, a dusk to dawn curfew (6 pm to 6 am) is hereby imposed in the following Local Government Areas of Orlu zone; namely; Orlu, Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Isu, Nwangele and Nkwerre.

“All law-abiding citizens are advised to comply strictly with the curfew as announced. Anyone caught violating the curfew will be treated as a suspect.

“The government wants to assure all Imo people that the situation in Orlu area is under control. Security operatives have been deployed on a 24-hour patrol of the zone. Equally, every security measure necessary has been put in place to ensure that law-abiding citizens can go about their businesses in the affected areas without any fear of molestation.

 “The government sincerely condoles with the families of the bereaved and all the victims of the unfortunate incident. I assure them that those who committed the heinous crime against them and their loved ones will never go unpunished. “

Three construction workers kidnapped in Ondo

Three construction workers have been kidnapped along Ikaramu-Akunnu Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday evening by some unknown gunmen.

The workers whose name has not yet been revealed were working at the ongoing rehabilitation of Ikaramu-Akunnu road when the hoodlums struck.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation had commenced into it.

“Our men are already in the area to rescue the victims,” the PPRO stated.

The traditional ruler of Ikaram, Oba Andrew Momodu, in a reaction, confirmed that the workers were kidnapped after they closed for the day’s job.

According to him, the hoodlums struck when the expatriate contractor handling the project had just left with his policemen.

The monarch appealed for more security men to comb the forest for a rescue operation.

Similarly, the Alauga of Auga Akoko, Oba Samuel Agunloye, added, “The incessant kidnapping and other criminal acts are now worrisome in the area.”

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Okeagbe Akoko, Mr Ade Akinwande, has led other officers to search the forest in a bid to rescue and release the victims.

Airtel signs $500m loan with Bank of America, others

Airtel Africa has announced the signing of a new $500m loan facility with a group of relationship banks to partially refinance the group’s €750m Euro-denominated bond (c.$880m) due May 20, 2021.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, by its Group Company Secretary, Simon O’Hara, the banks that participated in the facility include, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Citibank, HSBC, J.P. Morgan, Standard Chartered Bank, and two Indian relationship banks, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

O’Hara said the new committed facility consisted of a combination of a revolving credit facility and term loans with tenor of up to four years.

He stated that the balance of the Euro-denominated bond would be repaid with existing group cash to reduce gross debt and associated interest costs.

“The new loan facility further strengthens the core liquidity of the group,” the group said in the statement.

The telecommunication company also said it had prepayment flexibilities that would allow the group to optimize the efficiency of its capital structure with the free cash flows and cash receipts anticipated over the next 12 months, following the recent announcements related to tower sales and mobile money minority investments.

Reigning Mrs. World resigns, runner up takes over

The reigning Mrs World, Caroline Jurie, has resigned her title, the organization running the pageant, said late on Tuesday, weeks after she was involved in a controversy at the Mrs Sri Lanka event.

I stand proud today, knowing that I stood up for what is right. I believe the Mrs World Crown stands for a purpose,” Jurie wrote in a statement shared on her Instagram page.

She continued: “I know Mrs World Inc. does not condone malpractices. Therefore, wearing the Mrs World crown and holding the title on unfair grounds go against the purpose of ensuring a fair and equal stage for every woman.”

” Hence, I am stepping down from the title of Mrs World 2020 and I am handing over my Mrs World 2020 Crown. I hereby terminate the Mrs World 2020 contract I entered into on November 4, 2019, with Mrs World Inc.”

Jurie was arrested and released on bail this month after a fracas at the Mrs Sri Lanka pageant in Colombo, where Jurie forcibly removed the winner’s crown, claiming the other woman was a divorcee and not qualified to win the title.

“Her voluntary resignation decision was made solely by Caroline herself,” Mrs World Inc said late on Tuesday, in a news release on social media.

Jurie was not immediately reachable for comment.

Kate Schneider of Ireland, the runner-up in the 2020 contest which Jurie won, will be the new Mrs World 2020, the organization said.
