CPC Storms Owerri Shoprite On Sensitization

The Imo state Director General of Consumer protection commission, Hon. Mrs. Obioma Okafor led the management team of CPC Imo State as well as media practitioners in the state on *Consumer Rights awareness campaign* to Owerri Mall (Shoprite), on Tuesday 16th June 2020.

The quest to end obnoxious business practices and elimination all forms of hazardous products in our markets necessitated the DG’s awareness/sensitization tour. Since she assumed office as DG CPC Imo State, she has made it a point of duty to visit or invite the key ministries, parastatals, organized business associations and major markets such as supermarkets, fuel stations, Beckery, Pure water, and table water Companies, etc, relentlessly preaching the gospel of *”Do the right thing and ensure the safety of the consumers”*

The visit according to Hon. Mrs. Obioma Okafor was to create awareness and sensitize the management of Owerri Mall (Shoprite) on the need to do the right thing to safeguard the health and lives of all consumers in the state, which is the primary responsibilities of the agency.

In her address, the DG consumer protection council Imo state, Hon. Mrs. Obioma Okafor explained that the consumer protection council (CPC) Act, was enacted in 1992 and is the primary law in Nigeria which centers on a pragmatic approach for the enforcement of consumer rights, making the Act, consumer-focussed.

She explained further, that section 6 of the Act provides that consumers can bring complaints where they have suffered a loss, injury, or damage while section 8 provides for an opportunity for consumers to get redress which makes the Act adequate to meet consumer rights.

However, there have been instances where expired, adulterated, fake goods or harmful substances have been found in some shops, most especially goods like soft drinks, tin milk, beverages, cosmetics, drugs, and cases where foreign packaged food items have caused bodily harm and in extreme cases death. The rights of consumers highlighted in the Act have been abused on several occasions but I can assure you, is not going to be business as usual.

The DG stated that violation of the provision of the Act attracts severe punishment. This is why my humble self and the management team of CPC Imo state considered it imperative to embark and undertake this sensitization tour to increase public consumer awareness and ensure that consumers’ interests receive due consideration at appropriate quarters.

Mrs. Obioma Okafor reiterated that CPC under her watch has resolved to ensure that *consumers have value for their money.* The obnoxious practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers by companies, firms, trade associations, and individuals must stop. Henceforth, companies must be held accountable for the effects of their products on human health of Imo citizens.

Speaking further, Mrs. Obioma said, she is determined to work for the general good of Imolites while promising to promote and enhance good business development in the state. I’m committed to the protection of consumers interest and as a government, our primary assignment is the protection of the citizens to guarantee shared prosperity. I enjoin everyone in *OWERRI MALL* to be supportive to the shared prosperity Government of His Excellency senator Hope Uzodinma for the Recovery of our state, she added.

Speaking on behalf of the management of OWERRI MALL, the center manager, Mr. Bayode Amfowole appreciated the CPC Boss and assured her of the continuous determination of his management team to maintain that high standard which Shoprite all over the globe is known for. He explained that Shoprite has a central quality control department at Lagos that certifies the quality of any goods before it will be allowed into Shoprite or any Mall across the nation. In fact, our mantra is, “No customer leaves the mall unhappy,” he added.
