Danielson Akpan, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has been impeached for financial impropriety.
Akpan, who took office as NANS president in July 2018, worked past his 12-month term. This led to grievances from other officials and stakeholders of the arm.
At an emergency Senate meeting held on Tuesday, October 13, Akpan was impeached by the Association’s Senate arm after being convicted for financial impropriety. Akpan was impeached for diverting student’s COVID-19 palliatives and concealing relevant information to assist the organization’s growth and the country’s progress.
It was also alleged that he received huge sums of money for student COVID-19 palliatives from some government agencies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and diverted the money.
Just immediately after Mr. Akpan was impeached, a former vice-president, Chidi llogede was immediately sworn in as the president of NANS while all the association’s property and funds in possession of Mr. Akpan are yet to be fully recovered.
