…. Dissolves Party Structures

… Nwafor, Nlemigbo Affected

… Lobby Over New Caretaker Begins

National Executive council of the APC appears to have woken up from their slumber by dissolving all the party’s structures from the wards, LGA, and at the state level.

This is even as they extended to six months, caretaker, and extraordinary convention planning committee (CECPC).

However, this decision though coming late according to political Analysts has been described as the only solution to the lingered APC problem.

With the dissolution of the said structures, both the Daniel Nwafor led Exco which by law is the recognized executive in Imo as well as the caretaker led by Nlemigbo have been dissolved.

Meanwhile, with the dissolution of the party structures at all levels, the leaders of the various factions would begin to lobby for the caretaker seats which the NEC of the party would soon constitutes.

The National Executive Committee of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, has dissolved its wards, states, zonal and national party structures.

The decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting of the committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting had in attendance the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other party chiefs.

The committee also extended the tenure of the party’s caretaker extraordinary convention planning committee led by Governor Mai Buni by six months.

Speaking to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai said that the party also approved the expulsion of former National Vice Chairman, South-south, Ntufam Hilliard Eta, for his failure to withdraw the court case instituted against the caretaker committee.

In his opening remarks, President Buhari appealed to party members at all levels to make sacrifices that will move the party forward.

In a report published by Punch News, the President said, “I want to appeal to all our party members and leaders at all levels, to try and make the required sacrifices so that we are able to collectively restore our progressive and democratic political party, which can nurture and give expression to our collective dream of building a strong, united and developed Nigeria.

“May I use this opportunity to remind all of us of the need to recreate our negotiation secret of 2012, 2013 under our legacy parties. What guided our success to achieve the merger that produced the APC was the respect we were able to have for each other.

“In those times, decisions reached at both formal and informal consultations were respected with trusted initiatives taken and believed that they were needed to produce the required political platform that could guarantee electoral victory.

“Everyone of us as leaders ensured that those decisions were respected. I have through consultations of the caretaker committee and other leaders of the party, agree that our challenges in the party require that we take steps to rebuild the party from wards to national levels.

“The initiative to carry out membership registration revalidation is, therefore, a necessary, membership registration revalidation will lay the foundation for reorganizing our membership from ward to local government, state, and national levels.

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Joe Erico has died.

The Nigeria Football Federation’s spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, confirmed Erico’s death on Thursday.

A statement from the NFF quoted Erico’s family members as saying that the former assistant coach of Super Eagles complained of body pain and was treated for malaria, “only to be found dead in his bed at dawn” on Thursday.

“It is another sad day for Nigerian Football. Erico was among the very best of Nigeria’s international goalkeepers and also served the country with fervour and diligence as Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles between 2001 and 2002.

“He will be sorely missed. We pray that Almighty God grant him eternal rest and also grant his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear the big loss,” NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said.

Born Joseph Bassey Eric in the Odukpani local government area in what is today known as Cross River State, Erico belonged to the cast of the very best goalkeepers in the history of Nigeria’s senior team, and served at the same period as the revered Emmanuel Okala and Eyo Essien.

He made his debut for then Green Eagles in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Zambia in Lagos in July 1973 (which Nigeria won 3-2), and then kept goal in all of Nigeria’s six matches at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations in Ethiopia, where the Eagles finished third – the first time Nigeria would win a medal at the AFCON. Erico was also in goal in all of Nigeria’s pre-tournament friendlies against Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania just before the team flew to Ethiopia.

Nicknamed ‘Jogo Bonito’(Beautiful Game) for his preference for fluency and expression in the rhythm of play of his teams as a coach, Erico was part of the triumvirate (alongside late Amodu Shaibu and late Stephen Keshi) who were shooed in to do a rescue job for Nigeria as the ship to the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals tottered badly under Dutchman Johannes Bonfrere. With three matches left in the campaign and a must-win mandate for all, the trio got the job done and qualified Nigeria for Korea/Japan.

They also led the team to a bronze-medal finish at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Mali early 2002.

With his death on Thursday morning, it means all members of that historic triumvirate have now passed on.

Few months to 2023 Primaries: Okigwe zone yet to produce a Senator as Uzodinma, Ibezim Surrender to Supreme court

Published

One year to the build up to the 2023 elections, Imo North is yet to produce a senator to replace their late Senator, Benjamin Uwajumogu.

This is seen as Governor Uzodinma and Senator Araraume have surrendered their battle over the APC candidate for the said election to the Supreme Court which is yet to fix a date to hear the suit following controversies over the APC primaries.

Uwajumogu who died on the 18th December 2018 was buried early 2020 yet the zone has stayed without a senator.

Senator Araraume, one of the contestants to the APC primaries had dragged Ibezim to court, challenging his declaration by INEC as the candidate  of the party.

Few days to the APC primaries, the High Court upturned the candidature of Ibezim and replaced him with Araraume.

In same vain, Ibezim appealed against the lower Court’s judgment and at the Court of Appeal which Araraume appealed against at the Supreme Court.

At the time of filling this report, the Supreme Court has not fixed date to hear the suit between the duo of Araraume and Ibezim.

Some of the stakeholders in the zone have not  ceased to regret the non representation of the zone at the Senate getting to two years after the death of the former Senator, Benjamin Uwajumogu, an act which they described as a set back to the zone.

The situation is more worrisome as INEC has already fixed October 2022 for the primaries ahead of 2023 elections.

The implications of Okigwe having no Representative as its senator include that as the matters are still pending in courts, the tenure of any person that finally gets in as a senator drastically reducing and that would also affect the entire Okigwe Zone and Imo State in general.
