APC: Membership revalidation contrary to APC constitution – Oshiomole

Published

on

APC party’s membership revalidation exercise called by the Interim Caretaker Committee is contrary to the party’s constitution.

This was revealed by the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday, while fielding questions from journalists shortly after revalidating his membership of the party at Unit 1, Ward 10, Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government of Edo State.

Oshiomole said, “APC is governed by a constitution and not by man. The constitution only provides for registration and I registered as a member of the APC in 2014 under the Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.

“There is nothing in the APC constitution that says a member shall revalidate or renew his membership. Once you registered when you joined the party and you have not decamped, you are a member. So revalidation is strange to our constitution.

“I have only done this because I want peace to reign but in doing this, we have to be careful not to create constitutional breach,” he said.

Oshiomole, stated that quite a lot of people have joined the party since 2015 till now, while some decamped to other parties, some others are dead, there is no point in reviewing the register so those who have decamped to APC will be registered while those who are no more will be deleted.

He added, “If you ask me as a foundation member, who has never decamped, to revalidate my membership, it is double registration because there is nothing like revalidation in our constitution.

“By asking me to revalidate my membership means I was not a member. So, I think the correct language should be either reviewing or updating because it makes sense to review voters register due to the changes in membership for new members or for those that have exited the party.”

Oshiomole noted over time, that the party has been updating its register from time to time, creating opportunities for governors under the party today to become members following the voters’ registration update, hence they were able to contest the governorship election under the party.

“So what this means now is that I have come here to do another registration but I insist that my registration never expired within the provision of the APC constitution,”

He said, “For me, I think we should just move on. I am happy I just did it but I don’t need it because my membership has not expired and it can only expire when I decamp.

“History didn’t just begin today. If we don’t have a valid register, how did we conduct the congress in 2015 in which 16 million registered APC members voted to nominate President Muhammadu Buhari before the general election?”

He said at one of the party’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja when he was the national chairman, he had the honor of presenting a membership card to President Buhari.

“I am a founding governor of APC, I am not a creation of APC. Some of those who are rowdy here and there came to join APC, but we formed the APC,” he said.

Buhari makes health insurance compulsory for all Abuja residents

Published

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Health Insurance Scheme, FHIS, to make health insurance a compulsory for all Abuja residents.

This was disclosed by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, when he received the FHIS Director, Dr Ahmed Danfulani and his management team, who were at the FCTA to present the Working Documents of the Scheme.

A statement by Bello’s Chief Press Secretary, Anthony Ogunleye quoted the Minister as saying the FHIS management should ensure that the Scheme succeeds in the territory because “payment for health services all at once either by individuals or even the government is no longer tenable, considering the ever-increasing cost of medical services especially for diseases such as cancer or orthopaedic procedures.”

In Bello’s words: “The mandate given to us by President Muhammadu Buhari is to widen the coverage of health insurance in the FCT and the mandate I am giving you is to ensure that every citizen in the FCT, either in the formal or informal sector, is covered.

“You have to work out a system so that can cover certain diseases. If, for instance, someone is diagnosed with cancer, how can he or she pay for it? Cancer treatment, even the medication alone or chemotherapy alone, costs a lot of money not to talk of radiotherapy or surgery for some orthopaedic cases.”

The Minister encouraged the FHIS team to also work out ways in which “enrollees” under the Scheme should have the option of paying more for wider coverage.

Also he advised them to improve their services and grow the Scheme based on sound business practices, financial management and a robust ICT infrastructure.
