Alleged five hundred Million Naira allegation fraud by one Chinyere Amuchinwa, a native of Ideato North against the former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim has taken another dimension as the said Amunchinwa appears before the Federal High Court Abuja today.

Amunchinwa has accused Ohakim of duping her of five hundred Million Naira, a case that warranted Imo Women protesting in the State.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, has charged an Abuja-based woman, Mrs Chinyere Amuchiena Igwegbe, for allegedly blackmailing and supplying false information against a former Governor of Imo State, Dr Ikedi Ohakim.

Mrs Igwegbe is to be tried on Monday, July 19, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on charges of making unsubstantiated allegations against the ex-governor and one Chinedu Okpareke to police.

In a petition to the IGP, Mrs Igwegbe had accused Ohakim of conspiracy, criminal intimidation, and defamation of character, attempted kidnapping and threat to her life.

She also alleged paying to Ohakim a sum of N500M for the purchase of a land in Lagos during the 2019 general elections.

The police however claimed that the allegations were unsubstantiated during their investigation and that they were aimed at blackmailing her victims.

In a four-count criminal charge marked CR/187/2021 already filed against her and obtained by DAILY POST, Mrs Igwegbe who lives at Apo District of Abuja was said to have, in the petition, raised false allegations of conspiracy, intimidation, attempted kidnapping and threat to life against the former governor.

Igwegbe, among other false information, alleged that Ohakim alongside Okpareke threatened to release a nude photograph of her to the general public through social media.

Although police authorities arrested the former governor and filed criminal charges against him, Igwegbe was later arrested when it was found that allegations in her petition were unsubstantiated claims.

She was arrested by police operatives at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja after a court session where the Inspector General of Police had applied to withdraw the charge against the former governor.

However, an earlier attempt to arraign her on the four-count charges could not hold due to non-availability of the case file in the court prompting police to shift the arraignment to July 19.

In the charge signed by Matthew Omasun and Rotshang Faith Dimka, both of the Legal/ Prosecution Unit of the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Igwegbe was accused of supplying false information to the police with the intention to defame the former governor.

Count one of the charge reads: “that you Chinyere Amuchienwa Igwegbe (f) of 7b Emeida Estate Apo, Abuja, FCT, on or about August 14, 2020, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did furnish police authorities with false information and via allegations in a petition by your solicitors, Agala and Agala chambers to a public servant against (1) Dr. Ikedi Ohakim (2) Chinedu Okpareke on allegations of criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, defamation of character, attempted kidnapping and threat to life punishable with imprisonment, which could not be substantiated and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 140 of the Penal Code laws of Northern Nigeria.

In count two, the police accused her of furnishing the police authorities with false information via allegations in a petition against Dr. Ikedi Ohakim on the false allegations that “you paid Dr.Ikedi Ohakim the sum of N500 million naira for the purchase of a land in Lagos during the 2019 election, an allegations which could not be substantiated.”

In count three, she was accused of “intentionally exposing her genital organs and intentionally caused distress to other parties and that you did so with a selfie video with intention of deriving sexual pleasure from such act and you thereby committed an offence punishable under section 26(3) of the violence against persons (prohibition) Act, 2015.”

The offences are punishable under sections 140, of the Penal Code laws of Northern Nigeria and section 26 (3) of the violence against persons (prohibition) Act, 2015.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has commended the security agencies for bursting illegal oil bunkering syndicates operating in the State, describing the effort as a major breakthrough.

He said by uprooting members of the syndicate from their base and dismantling their illegal refineries, the security operatives are helping to restore confidence in those doing genuine businesses and contributing to the development of the society.

The Governor spoke when he visited the headquarters of the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) in Owerri on Monday to assess the quantity of petroleum products seized from the suspects s well as the persons caught by the security operatives in relation to the oil bunkering and illegal refining of crude.

The Governor noted that illegal oil bunkering and refineries has of late been on the increase, regretting that the activities have caused serious economic dent on the Federal Government and by extension, the State Governments revenue.

The Governor said: “The consequences of these illegal practices have been that the federal revenue has gone down so much, the State revenue, also by extension, has equally gone down.”

The Governor said that the offence of illegal oil bunkering and refining is a very serious one, noting that “apart from being a national economic sabotage it has not helped matters in the determined efforts to reduce crime in the southern part of the country.”

Governor Uzodimma recalled that oil companies have of late bore the brunt of the nefarious activities of the operators of illegal refineries and those vandalizing oil pipelines and stealing crude oil in Nigeria.

He therefore reassured that “Government will do her best to continue to go against those in the illegal business to help conserve Federal Government revenue and by extension, that of the State, and as well bring sanity to the operating environment of oil companies in Nigeria.”

He expressed joy that so far the efforts of government and the security agencies in partnering to sanitize the environment against crime and criminality is yielding positive result.

The Governor pointed out that members of the syndicate were “caught on their various places of operations where they were practicing their activities on the various illegal deport they established for the refined oil.”

He explained that the value of what was found on members of the gang in terms of naira and kobo is huge and runs into “hundreds of millions of naira.”

“The reassuring good news is that the culprits have confessed to the crime because they were caught in the act,” the Governor explained.

The Governor therefore thanked the security agencies “for a job well done” and enjoined them “not to relent”

He also urged the public to be vigilant and report any case of illegal practice “be it in oil or other security breaches to the security agencies for prompt action.”
